Ice Cream Takedown at the Bell House

So dairy and I are having a moment. And that's sort of a dangerous thing when you're lactose intolerant.

Nevertheless, I ventured out to the Ice Cream Takedown yesterday at The Bell House in Brooklyn's Gowanus section to cheer on my girl Kristin. Around 30 people competed for prizes and love, offering up icy-fun concoctions ranging from Amazonian fruit-magic something-ish to absinthe-infused chocolate chip. (I know! Creative AND buzzy.)

"Coffee and Donuts in the Morning" ice cream from a Brooklynauts team:

The winning Audience's Choice scoop? The "Caprese Freezee" by Tony Santora. Tony's competition, his son Antony, came in third. After the news, I think Tony even teared up a bit--and it all ended with a big happy family hug. Because that is what ice cream can do, folks.

Thanks to all the ice-creamers themselves: magical, wonderful people who I hope will feed me again very, very soon. Just don't let me forget the lactose pills, ya'll.

Blue Marble Brooklyn

I recently learned that the original Blue Marble Ice Cream on Atlantic Avenue is closing (not Blue Marble itself--just this particular store) due to rising rents. I always hate when small, cool shops close--especially lovely ones like this that are shining little gems in the neighborhood.

Naturally, I had to, ahem, stop by and treat myself to one last scoop of creamy goodness. Fortunately, there's another location nearby on Court Street. But I still hate to see this one go.
